Virtual rendering of paintings, books and documents

The possible applications and the potential future developments of the "Process for the treatment of writing and decorative materials on paper and parchment supports" were the focus of a study day organized by the General Direction for the Archives Documentation of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Activities, with the cooperation of the ”Cenacolo” and the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA). ("Noah's Ark", Workshop on innovative solutions for the examination, fruition and protection of documentary material, October 19, 2001 - National Archives, Rome).
During the meeting, it has been stressed the possibility of overcoming the natural limitations of microfilm, storing digital images and texts and making it possible for anyone to consult by distance, without compromising documents, otherwise inaccessible. It has been discussed the urgency to write a map of the risk that controls the status of conservation of our paper heritage, indicating the priorities to be used in restoration interventions, and including lesions and alterations until now over sighted by the simple visual inspection.
ENEA has also shown its striking proposal, called "Noah's Ark", consisting in the building of a shelter war and natural calamity-proof, in which to store in a small space all documents core of our culture for future generations thanks to the digital format.
