The stucco works are used to decorate both the internal and external surfaces of the monuments; they have a different material composition depending on location, on exposure and on technique (bas-reliefs and high-reliefs). They can be monochromatic, polychromatic or characterized by gold-plating.
The Cesare Brandi’s restoration theory is worth in this field more than elsewhere: to respect the authenticity of the material as well as the meaning, to carry out minimum interventions for the integration of gaps and missing parts and anyways using distinguishable, compatible and reversible technologies.
The restoration operations begin with the
pre-consolidation and securing of parts in danger of collapse; if located outdoors or in unhealthy places, the
disinfection by biodeteriogens should be carried out. They may show themselves in the form of molds, algae and patinas.
Thus, it proceeds with the
cleanup, by different techniques and different tools depending on the cases (mechanical removing of the “scialbatura”, micro-sand-blasting, chemicals applied by buffer or wet pack) and with the
consolidation by injections (of pre-packaged mortars or resins),
detachment and re-adhesion of fragments, re-establishment of the cohesion between the layers. If there are gaps or missing parts or modelling part, you can proceed with the
re-integration. If possible and allowed (depending on the remaining original elements or reliable historical sources, but in any case on the advice of the managing of the site) using the technique of
the modeling casts. Duplicates in plaster or resin are carry out, based on shapes in rubber, made on the original decorations survivors, and are rearranged in the original sites. In conclusion of the intervention it pays attention on aesthetic presentation and on the final protection by “scialbature”, layers or
protective products colorless.
