Metallic manufactures and alloys

Copertura campanile chiesa Santissima TrinitàIn the field of Cultural Heritage, the metal can be used for the production of sculptures, but also for architectural elements such as railings, windows, roofing, or both indoor and outdoor furniture such as lamps, official badges, handles. The material can be composed of a single chemical element (iron, gold, copper) and alloys (bronze, steel, brass). The executive techniques are different: for example, the statues of big size were usually made by melting on counter-form by other materials; instead, decorative and furniture items were directly forged wrought iron.

Ringhiera edificio via BoncompagniThe restoration of metallic artefacts is a very particular field of a general discipline. Even if the classic work steps are followed, the instruments and products are very specific and even the operators are highly specialized. The intervention on these artefacts provides cleaning any layers over putted (concretions, dirt), treatment with corrosion inhibitors and putting forward again of the original hue. If the metal is not painted, it can be expected to apply a surfactant and then a microcrystalline wax to finish the surface and subsequent polishing. In cases of large defects, it can think to the rebuilding with a metallic material worked in a manner as close as possible to the original, but still distinguishable.
For the protection from corrosion of large size manufactures can also use the so-called anodes sacrifice, metals less noble than the ones present in the manufacture that for their electrochemical properties, corrode themselves preferentially.
