Once having an on sigh investigation, it is possible to graph all the information collected: among them it is very important to recognize the materials that constitute the artwork. The elaboration product is usually a false colour mapping of the manufacture, in which each material identified is associated with a net (coloured backgrounds or in black and white), generally standardized in the theory of restoration.

Into the mapping also merge the results of chemical and physical investigations, carried out on small samples (microscopic diagnosis) to characterize each material with the correct nomenclature and scientific description.

To the legend attached to the drawings are associated schedule that describe scientifically the material, its surface treatment, the location in the artefact that is being analyzed and other useful information for the project.

A particularly important survey of materials is the recognition of the masonry stratigraphic units (USM), which results from the discipline of archaeology.

In an archaeological excavation it is essential the analysis of the stratigraphic units, basically the historical phases investigated by levels overlapped from the depth of the soil until the archaeological ruins. Instead, the USM are analyzed generally by prospectus of the findings, that have undergone several operations in the past (building, extensions, additions, maintenance or restoration interventions, demolitions), in order to reconstruct its history through the surface analysis.
